College Application Process:
Your LCHS School Counselors are here to assist with all college preparation and application questions. Beginning in the Junior year, the Counseling Department will provide information about college applications, letters of recommendation, Naviance, and so on.
If you are able to visit colleges in your Junior or Senior year, this might help you make a decision about where to apply. Often, appointments for tours of a college can be made on the school's individual website.
Seniors: During the Fall Semester, your School Counselors will provide you with a presentation about the college application process. Then, you will submit a post-high school plans "green form" to your School Counselor so that they may schedule an individual appointment with you to help you with your post-graduation plans and letters of recommendation. Follow-up meetings may take place to make sure that your college applications and transcripts were submitted.
Juniors: Feel free to schedule an appointment with your counselor during the Spring Semester to help plan for your college and post-graduation plans.
For most private colleges, you will need a letter of recommendation from your School Counselor as well as letters from one or two academic teachers. Please provide 3-4 weeks notice as a courtesy to anyone you consider asking for a letter of recommendation.
Naviance is a web-based program that serves as an educational resource for students and parents/guardians. It also provides communication between the La Cañada High School Counseling Department and students/families. Naviance assists with the following types information:
1. Career Assessments & Exploration
2. College Exploration & Research
3. Resume Creation
4. Scholarship Listings
5. Teacher & School Counselor Letters of Recommendation
6. Submission of College Electronic Documents (e-docs): transcripts, reports, and school profiles.
All students will have an account created on their behalf and will receive an introduction to Naviance in the 9th grade. Once the account is created, students will use their e-mail address and self-created password to log in.
Parents can gain access to the program by contacting a School Counselor and requesting a registration code in order to create a new account. Parents will have access to many of the same functions as the student version of the program.
We highly encourage all students to utilize this program as it provides a variety of resources for college and career planning and decision making. Students should log in on a regular basis as School Counselors send e-mails about upcoming events and information.
