1. Witnessing History and a Request for Kindness and Empathy - January 2021 has provided us with important historical moments, the kind of which one can easily anticipate will be remembered for years to come given the Presidential Inauguration, the January 6th Insurrection at the Capitol, and the passing of 400,000 Americans who succumbed to Covid-19. With today’s Presidential Inauguration, we witness a fellow Californian making history as Vice President Kamala Harris becomes both the first woman to hold that lofty position and the first person of both Carribean and South Asian heritage to hold that office.  Yet the marking of these historic firsts is complicated by the reality that our nation is divided and our national discourse and conversation often politically volatile. Please be sensitive to the feelings of one another today in particular, as students and staff are experiencing a range of emotions as our national Presidential administrations change hands. Today provides us a chance to practice empathy, which itself is the chance to wonder how another is feeling about events when those feelings are different than the ones you hold. Be kind, like you usually are, and where you can acknowledge the concern or feelings of another, help brighten their day by listening and empathizing. Thank you, Spartans.

2. High Wind Alert/Possible Power Outage - LCHS Administration has learned that Southern California Edison may shut off power to areas affected by the anticipated high winds. Please keep your devices charged as much as you can. Please check Google classroom for updates when power returns to learn of the instructional plan if our distance learning program gets interrupted. LCHS Administration will communicate information via email, phone, and text when new information is available. Just roll with it as best as you can, Spartans!

Wellness Wednesday Note - January 20, 2021 - As mentioned in item #1 of today’s announcements, everyone in Spartan Nation has a chance to practice a kind of mindfulness about their own feelings related to events of today and the feelings of those around them. I also wanted to share this week’s Wellness Action Calendar for a Happier January. Please review this for each day of the week and take the Spartan challenge to implement the ideas each day of the week.

1. Events of January 6, 2021 - LCHS administration wishes to address and acknowledge the unsettling events that we witnessed in our nation's capital. The insurrection of citizens attacking and destroying parts of the Capitol that resulted in loss of life and a threat to our democracy played out in front of us via TV live feed, social media notifications, and outreach from our friends and loved ones. Troubling violence, with Americans attacking Americans, has left many in our nation, many at our school, unsettled. LCHS administration has asked our teachers to engage students with chances to ask questions, reflect on how the events of yesterday have made students feel, and wish to offer the following proactive steps that individuals can take. First, we wish that our students make an active news consumption plan. Please consider turning OFF social media, news, and other notifications so you can focus on the people and tasks in front of you. Next, participate in class discussions and be candid with teachers, particularly in the later class periods where you are “talked out” about engaging with this. Please engage in discussions in class and beyond with an eye toward focusing on wrong actions over labelling people, particularly in these clearly divided times. We hope families will also talk about this to share questions, feelings, and concerns. Please remember, that LCHS remains a safe place to learn, with teachers, administration, and staff who are here to help support students academic and social emotional well-being. Students should reach out to their counselor with concern or email or call the LCHS Wellness Center at wellnesscenter@lcusd.net or 818.952.4235

Wellness Wednesday Message - Happy New Year to all in Spartan Nation. We hope you had a great winter holiday and a good first day back at school for the start of a new semester. For Wellness Wednesday today, we ask that you be mindful across the day. While many have heard of mindfulness, for those who have not, it is basically the idea of paying attention to things that you may not otherwise pay attention to. Here are two Spartan Challenges for today - pay attention to your breathing twice in the morning, twice at mid day, and twice as you are finishing the organized part of your day. Are you breathing in a shallow manner, taking short breaths that may indicate how you are feeling? I find that closing my eyes and taking a couple of deep breaths through my nose, holding it for a count or two, and then release through my mouth helps slow me down and regain some focus. The second Spartan Challenge regards ensuring you are exercising today and everyday. How many “steps” did you take today? If there are a bunch, how many miles did you cover, even if it was over a short geographical area, like home or school? Being mindful of some of these things that we do normally across a day can help you better gain insights into how you are feeling, when maybe you are involved in a task, like school, that demands your attention, energy, and focus. Welcome back, and…...

Go, Spartans!

In Appreciation,

Jim Cartnal - Principal
