Special Education at La Canada High School is a support system for students who have been identified as needing special instructional support and accommodations in their educational environment. Students receiving these services are assigned to one of the special educational staff members who will become the student’s case carrier. The case carrier is the contact person for the student’s individual support system.
The support system for students who receive special Education services is designed through the student’s annual Individual Educational Plan (IEP). A team made up of the student, student’s case carrier, parent(s), and classroom teacher(s), and support staff (psychologist, counselor, speech therapist, occupational therapists, and administrators) develop the IEP and the individualized support system. Support services designed by the IEP include a wide range of options from registration in general education classes with support from Special Education staff, to specialized, modified classes, taught by Special Education staff.

Registration for all students who receive Special Education support MUST be done in conjunction with the student’s case carrier and is based on the student’s IEP. A student’s registration is NOT COMPLETE until the student’s case carrier has verified that the courses are in compliance with the student’s IEP. Students and parent(s) must complete the Course Selection Contract. Signatures of parent(s) and the student’s case carrier are required in order to confirm that course selections are in accordance with the student’s IEP. There are two types of Special Education classes taught by the Special Education staff. Enrollment in these classes is open to students whose IEP team has determined a need:
Directed Studies – a class designed to give students time to get extra instruction or assistance from the student’s teacher of record and/or time to stay current on assignments from general education classes.
Modified Academic Classes – classes that follow similar curriculum to the general education classes but which are modified and designed for students who need more individualized assistance than can be provided in the general educational setting.
