Letters of Recommendation
Ask one or two teachers for a letter of recommendation by the end of your junior year and no later than at least 4-5 weeks prior to the application due dates.

To request a counselor letter of recommendation, you must complete the required steps on SCOIR and schedule a one-on-one meeting.

Choose a teacher that can give several specific examples describing your characteristics as a person and student, your written work, the degree and quality of class participation, and your interest in the subject. This is not necessarily the teacher who gave you an “A.”  Recommendations should come from junior or senior level teachers.

• Always waive your right to see the recommendation, known as the FERPA waiver.
• After signing the FERPA waiver, match your Common App account with your SCOIR account.
• Add your teacher recommenders to your SCOIR account and invite them to submit a letter of recommendation to all schools.
• Check with each teacher a week to 10 days before the application is due to be sure that the letter of recommendation has been uploaded into SCOIR.

Letters of Recommendation are neither required nor permitted for UC or CSU applications.
